How to use a melee weapon
There are all sorts of mele weapons, but here’s a short list of those that are the best to use: the wrench, sledgehammer, pan, chair. Of course, this is just my opinion, so you might disagree with me here. So lets dive in to the uses that the melee weapons provide.
Uses
First off, it’s not advisable to use a melee weapon as your primary weapon. Although some are pretty decend, they still recquire you to go shortrange with the zombie, giving him a chance to hit you. And remember, you only have 100 HP, after 3 of 4 hits you’re done for.
However, the melee weapon can work as a very nice back-up. Especially in situations that you don’t have a whole lot of ammo for your primary weapon (pistol, rifle, etc.). Therefor, the melee weapon can function as a ‘finish off’ weapon. First deal some damage with your gun, and then finish it off with your melee. This way, you can safe some ammo and if you do this properly, you’ll kill the zombie in one hit, without being hit yourself.
Destroying
In some ZP:S maps, you’ll notice that you have to destroy certain things: cabinets, wooden planks, control panels, you name it. To destroy these, you should never use up your ammo. Instead, use a melee weapon. There are a lot of melee weapons around in most maps, so sometimes, you dont actually have to carry a melee weapon with you all the time. Most of the time, you can actually just drop the melee weapon and pick one up when it’s needed.
However, in some maps, you’ll need to take a melee weapon with you from the start, because you won’t encounter another one. In that case, go for light melee weapons. So don’t start carrying around sledgehammers or chairs with you, these will slow you down. A good melee weapon to take with you for long walks is the plank, since it doesn’t weight anything at all.
How to kill with it?
When you try to kill a zombie with a melee weapon, you should never just stand in front of him. There are some tricks to avoid getting hit by the zombie.
First of all: most melee weapons have a longer range than the zombie arms. Therefor, one tactic you could use is: go forward to make your hit, then move backwards right away. Try to stay out of the zombie arm reach. If you do this properly with, for instance the sledge hammer, you can easily hit the zombie 3 or 4 times, without ever getting hit.
Beside that, you can really confuse a zombie when you circle strafe it. Just keep moving around him, this way, he’ll get dizzy and will also find it hard to actually keep up with you. That’s exactly what you want, cause then it’s pretty much impossible for him to hit you.
Hint
It’s a common heard question: should I keep the melee weapon I get at the start of the round? Or should I drop it right away?
There’s not one answer to this question. First of all, have a look at the melee weapon you get. Crowbars, normal hammers and pots are weapons you can drop right away (normally), cause they are just not very good. But when you get a wrench or a pan, it can become a different story. If you decide to drop it, then do it in a place so that you can easily get to it, if it ever becomes necessary. If you do decide to keep it, then wait to see what other weapons you’ll find. If you find a rifle and magnum, you might as well drop it. But just a rifle with a melee weapon could be a good combination.
